About Us
The origin of the Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security can be traced to 2007. Representatives of the School of Computing Science, the North East Fraud Forum (NEFF) , and relevant international experts came together to discuss the expanding programme of the School's systems security research, and NEFF's concerns regarding the difficulty of responding adequately to the ever-changing cybercrime scene.
Two activities resulted from these discussions. First, the Hadrian Project was set up, and is now a burgeoning regional cooperative activity, spanning industry, commerce, local government, police and academia, undertaking a number of initiatives related to the fight against cybercrime. Secondly, the academically focussed Centre for Cybercrime and Computer Security was created. CCCS brings together the School of Computing's long-standing computer security research interests and our growing collaboration with organizations involved in the daily fight against cybercrime.
The School of Computing at Newcastle University conducts world class research and education in a variety of topics, including cybercrime and computer security .
The North East Fraud Forum (NEFF) has a large membership base of mainly locally-based companies and organisations concerned about, or active in combatting, computer-related fraud. Thanks to NEFF's leadership, there are now other similar organisations covering almost the entire UK, and an overarching National Federation of Fraud Forums.

- Aad van Moorsel
Aad is a Professor in the School of Computing Science, which he joined in 2004 having previously been a researcher at Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill and then a research manager at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto, both in the United States. His research group develops tools and techniques to make Internet use safer for enterprises, and allow SMEs to exploit the benefits of the Internet without undue risk.
- Research Director
- Jeff Yan
Jeff joined the School of Computing Science as a Lecturer, specialising in information security, and in particular systems security, applied cryptography and human aspects of security. His security research has attracted significant attention, having been selected for presentation at the 2008 Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition in London, and short-listed for one of the 2009 Times Higher Education Awards, in the Outstanding Engineering Research Team of the Year category.
